Probably the most famous visitors to paint the region were Vincent Van Gogh and his fellow artist Paul Gauguin. It is very easy to trace their steps and see through your own eyes what they captured on canvas. Visit the Chapel of Saint-Honoret in the Alyscamps, the gardens of the present Mediatheque which formerly housed the city hospital where Vincent recovered after cutting off his ear, "Le Café, La Nuit" on the Forum Square, a starry night from the quay of the Rhône and many other sites in Arles as well as the fields of Sunflowers in the surrounding countryside. Also just outside of Arles is "his" bridge, recently restored. Pablo Picasso was a habituate of Arles enjoying the bull fights, drinks at a local café and the "camaraderie" of his long time friends. The village of Maillane is the birthplace of Frédéric Mistral who with Joseph Roumanille created a group called "Le Félibrige", Its foundation insured the defense and promotion of the language and culture of Provence. At Fontvieille Alphonse Daudet wrote his "Letters of my Mill" wherein the goat of Mr Seguin and other Provencal folk tales were captured for posterity. At Marseille and Aubagne, Marcel Pagnol put down on paper the local spirit and voice of the area as well as his touching youthful memories. Many of his novels have been made into films (such as the "Fanny..." trilogy, "The Glory of My Father" and "The Château of My Mother", "Jean de Florette" and "Manon des Sources"). Emile Zola a friend of Cézanne and also a native of Aix-en-Provence writes of the region in his "Les Rougon-Macquart". He is probably better known for his moralistic novels of social injustice such as "Germinal" or "Nana". As a journalist he took up his pen against the falsely condemned Captain Dreyfus in the masterful piece "J'accuse". The prophetic works and predictions of Nostradamus, of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, although written in the XVIth century in verse form still intrigue present day readers. George Bizet (music) and Alphonse Daudet (lyrics) gave us the opera "L'Arlésienne". Gounod used Fréderic Mistral's work to compose "Mireille". This vital creative energy continues to play a force through out Provencal history and many writers including the late Edward Durell wrote his "Alexandrian Quartet" from his adopted home in the region. More recently, Peter Mayles wrote charming and humorous tales of his experiences in Provence from his home in the Lubéron. Actes Sud the literary publishing house has its home base in Arles and just outside of Arles is the musical publishing company, Harmonia Mundi. At Aix-en-Provence and Marseille, the "Preljocaj" company and the dance school, ballet companies and theatrical groups greatly add to the cultural life of the region. Both "IAM" and "Massilia Sound System" musical groups are based in Marseille. We are told that Marseille has a disproportionate number of murder mystery writers, could it be the water ? Provence boasts of many film location and publicity shoots, therefore, it is not uncommon to turn the corner and be surrounded by the bustle of a film company and a scene of the last century or "a cut to the chase" nor is it strange to find yourself next to a celebrity at the local café or restaurant. One always runs into artists painting a scene or photographers snapping a inspired view. In July, Arles host the International Photographic Reunion, where photographers from all over the world view each others works and those of late greats. All exhibitions, courses and slide shows in the antique theatre are open to general public. |
