Provence is, of course, also known for its distinct furniture style and fabric design. The ateliers of Souleiado at Tarascon (Pierre Deux in the USA) and Olivades at Saint-Etienne du Grès create new variations on designs each year, from their extensive collection of antique wood block prints dating back through centuries. Provence has contributed to the fashion industry through two of its native sons, Leo Ferrat and Christian Lacroix as well as many others inspired by its fabric design and costumes. It is not unusual to see women dressed in the unique "Mireille" (young girls peasant costumes) or the splendid dignity of an "Arlésienne" costume from the XIXth century. The folkloric museums of Arles "Museon Arlaten" (established by Mistral with his Nobel prize money) as well as the Souleiado Museum of Tarascon and the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions at the Château-Gombert give you a good selection of Provencal decorating, costuming and items of daily as well as ceremonial life through the centuries. Collections of antique manger scenes are on display at several museums in Marseille, Arles, Le Paradou, Maussane and Les Baux-de-Provence. The ancient craft and the current practitioners of "Santons" (the figurines that contribute to the reconstruction of the scene at the stable in Bethlehem) can be visited at many ateliers in the towns of Aubagne, Marseille and Aix-en-Provence or at the fairs and exhibitions around Christmastime. The soap of Marseille and of Salon which created local fortunes are still sort after and readily available. Local craftsmen still create the time-honored pottery and "Faïence" as well as furniture and accessories in native fruit wood. Sachets of lavender and the special blend of herbs are available as is a region's renowned olive oil and liquors. Hand-dipped candles can be brought at the local manufacturer in Graveson with its nearby scent museum with its boutique featuring unusual fragrances and perfumes of the region. The quaint village of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, famous for Petrarque and his sonnets to Laura, houses a mill where paper is made in the old fashion way at the source of the Sorgues river. Nearby is the lovely village of Isle-sur-la-Sorgues with its many water-mills and hundreds of shops selling objects and antiques as well as an outdoor antiques market during the week-end. Provence is home to so many artists, writers and performers who enjoy the mild climate and especially the private tranquility that is such a contrast to that of the French Riviera. |
