Forts & Castles

From the middle age the people of the region fortified their dwellings and resisted aggressive invasions whether from barbaric hordes or neighboring nobles and ultimately from the king of France wishing to bring the kingdom of Provence into his realm. From the villages perched on peaks throughout the area to the Roman arenas of Arles fortified during the middle age and housing 10 000 inhabitants, Provence has many fine examples of both fortress and fortified castles of all periods in all states of repair.

The ruined citadel of Les Baux-de-Provence bears witness to the ferocious campaigns waged to claim the region. In the Lubéron's high over the charming village of Lacostes are the ruins of the Marquis de Sade's castle. Visit the fortified abbey of Montmajour, originally build on a island presently on a hill in the middle of reclaimed farm land. The Rhône river separates two outstanding castles in good repair, the castle of king René at Tarascon and that of the counts of Beaucaire. The great Vauban had forts build throughout France. Noted examples include the three in Marseille, Saint-Jean and Saint-Nicolas overlooking the port as well as the Château d'If in its bay. Entire towns were walled as represented by Avignon whose walls were restored by Violet le Duc in the XIXth century.

Of later period, just south of Avignon, you can visit the lovely Château, still home of the marquises of Barbentane, with its impressive collection of Provencal furniture.
